In Europe, over 215 million people smoke every day. Everybody knows they shouldn’t smoke because smoking is really bad for the health. So why do people do it? The truth is that nearly 95% of adult smokers started when they were teenagers. People don’t usually start smoking after the age of 20. But because smoking is very addictive, it’s hard to stop once you’ve started. So if you start smoking as a teenager, you’ll find it difficult to give up as an adult. And almost every adult who smokes wishes they had never started.
In spite of everything known about the risks and dangers of smoking, psychologists and parents still haven’t found a way to stop teenagers doing it. In the United States, about 3,000 teenagers try their first cigarette every day. That’s one million new teenage smokers every year. Teenagers understand that smoking is bad for them but just don’t use their common sense. Because, at an age when they want to feel more independent and to have more responsibility, many believe that smoking makes them ‘cool’ and ‘adult’. Some do it just because their friends are doing it, not because they want to themselves. If you start smoking as a teenager, you’ll have a habit that is dirty, expensive, unhealthy and unwanted for the rest of your life.
